3 Quotes That Will Change The Way You Mix

The following 3 quotes will help you improve your workflow, enhance your mixes, and inspire you to be more creative. Enjoy!

Today I want to share with you three quotes that will change the way you mix. Now these three quotes will help you improve your workflow, enhance your mixes, but most importantly, inspire you to be more creative.

Quote #1 comes from George Massenburg, and he says:

“I’ll always go with delay instead of reverb if I can hide it.”

Now delay can actually achieve a similar sense of depth as reverb, but it won’t take up as much space in your mix. So if you rely more on delay, you’ll actually create more space and clarity for other tracks in your mix.

Quote #2 comes from Chris Lord-Alge, and he says:

“I make my mixes big by monitoring really quietly.”

Now this seems totally counterintuitive, but it actually works. Without the impact of listening at loud levels, you actually have to work harder to achieve clarity, separation, and punch in your mixes. This will help make your tracks sound better and both loud and soft volumes.

Quote #3 is by none other than Dave Pensado, and it says:

“It’s better to sound new than to sound good.”

As a mixer, people are going to come to you for what you can bring to a project. Freshness, originality – that’s always going to be in demand. You want to know the rules, but don’t be afraid to break them.
